"I just see the back of a bitter man. Someone too busy but somehow still finds time to start another family…. No one kind. No one sweet. No one generous. No one funny. The only one in my life that fits close to that description… is the person in front of me right now… and I'm the bitter one with his back turned."
― Kousuke Hirahara[source]
Kousuke Hirahara (平原 こうすけ, Hirahara Kōsuke) is the one of the main characters of I Love Yoo. He is the first son of Randulph Skuli Hirahara and Yui Hirahara and the half brother of Yeong-Gi.
He is currently working as the Director of Finance of the Hirahara Corporation, his family's business. In Episode 136 he gets the job of CFO of the Japan branch of Hirahara Corp, although he has not started this position yet.
Background
Kousuke had a very rigid schedule when he was a child. In Episode 141, he explains to Shin-Ae that he did this himself. However, since he was young he showed a very strong drive to emulate his father in order to gain his approval. This caused him to focus heavily on school and work, and he started helping with the company when he was 12 years old.
The most disruptive force in his life was Nol, who he met when he was about 10 years old, as shown in Episode 140. He tried to "extinguish his light" out of fear, something that resulted in him being very cruel to Nol, eventually ending in an altercation that got Nol sent to a mental facility. The two were officially introduced when Nol got out.
Kousuke graduated High School when he was 14 years old as valedictorian. His parents were especially argumentative at this time, most likely because of Nol.
Kousuke also went through some sort of rebellious phase while he was in college and Nol was in the mental facility. During this time he hung out frequently with a friend group involving Yu Jing and Hansuke. However, their friend group experienced a tumultuous fallout, and Kousuke started focusing more on work.
Appearance
Kousuke's appearance primarily resembles that of his mother, Yui Hirahara. He has black hair that is styled into three prongs, paired with slightly slanted light blue eyes. He also has a piercing on his left ear.
He almost always dons formal attire such as business suits or high-quality designer clothing.
He usually displays a serious facial expression.
Personality
Kousuke tends to act cold and sophisticated while at work and in public, however he also has the tendency to be rude, such as when he tripped Shin-Ae for a piece of cake or when he insulted Jayce's appearance upon their first meeting.
He gives in easily as pressure, and will do things when goaded enough. This is why he got his ear piercing.
During the story, he starts becoming more paranoid and reactionary, especially following Yu Jing's conversation with Shin-Ae in Episode 91. He fears that people are talking badly about him, which is shown in Episode 122 when he gets drunk.
His demeanor has significantly changed since his altercation with Nol, causing him to be significantly more reactionary and emotional.
Relationships
Yeong-Gi 'Nol'
Kousuke and Nol have an incredibly tumultuous relationship as brothers.
They did not meet until Nol was about 5 years old and Kousuke was about 10, as shown in Episode 142. Yui left Kousuke at a park, where Nol approached Kousuke, intending to become friends. Kousuke quickly recognized how closely Nol resembled Rand, and started asking why Nol looked like Rand and questioned him about his father, very clearly terrified. At the end of the interaction, Kousuke told Nol “If it’s true I have a brother… you’re nothing but a mistake.”
However, the two continued to run into each other, something which distressed Kousuke, who just wanted Nol and his mother to disappear. It was during this time that Kousuke started making fun of Nol for his name, comparing it to the word “null” amongst other things as shown in Episode 148.
After Nessa died when Nol was about 10, Nol reached out to Kousuke for help, saying he was the only one who he had left. However, Kousuke still cruelly turned Nol away. When Nol was at the Hirahara mansion looking for Rand, Kousuke and him got into an allegedly violent altercation. Nol was sent away to a mental facility for two years.
The two brothers were officially introduced after Nol got out, but they still had negative feeling towards each other, and while they are less outwardly aggressive for the majority of the story, the two still have a strong dislike for each other, which is made very clear in all of their interactions.
Despite this, there have been a few times that the brothers have cooperated with each other. For example, Nol agreed to be compliant with Kousuke for the rest of the week if he would buy Shin-Ae food in Episode 23. Additionally, during the formal, the two teamed up alongside Meg to search for Shin-Ae after they discovered that she had been drugged.
However, things get even worse the night of Min-Hyuk’s surprise party, when Kousuke spends a lot of the night chasing a drunk Nol around because of the responsibility he feels his father entrusted him with, eventually bringing Nol to the party. Here, they end up fighting, which Min-Hyuk tries to mediate, but to no avail. Instead, the argument escalates with Nol yelling at Kousuke to hit him. Kousuke initially doesn’t, but while Nol’s back is turned, he punches him, throwing him off of the balcony.
Nol runs off after this interaction, but Kousuke chases him down, continuing to hit him in the street. While Nol is down, the two have a very emotional conversation in which Kousuke admits that he hates how Nol reminds him of his own negative traits and how Nol reminds him of his father.
However, Nol doesn’t forgive Kousuke because of this, and says that he can’t forget how Kousuke has treated him. He threatens to fight Kousuke, but he is so injured that he can’t. Later, in Episode 238, Kousuke comes to visit Nol in order to return his phone, but is unable to say anything and runs away. At this point, Nol is still upset with Kousuke.
Shin-Ae Yoo
Shin-Ae and Kousuke got off to a rocky start, with Kousuke tripping her for a piece of tiramisu. However, once they meet again, they are on better, but still uncomfortable, terms. For the first part of the story, Kousuke is insistent that she allows him to repay a favor for bringing Nol to the hospital; however, this is dropped after the formal.
Their relationship also took a turn after the formal, since Rand told Kousuke that he could give Shin-Ae a job at their company. This is when they began a more formal, business relationship. Kousuke is quite strict when it comes to work, and his perfectionism in this area has affected Shin-Ae. Her first day of work didn't go well, ending with her spilling coffee on herself and ripping her skirt. Later, in Episode 89, Kousuke expresses disappointment that she went to the amusement park over the weekend, when she said she wanted work off for responsibilities she had. She explains that she still had responsibilities, but she needed to give herself a break.
He also signs her up for etiquette classes, which he tells Nol are "for her own good", and explains "I had an inkling she will not fit into our world, and her actions that day only proved my judgements correct." Despite her "improper" behavior, Kousuke still wants to keep her working at Hirahara Corp., and tries to convince her to stay when she mentions she is thinking about quitting in Episode 131. Later, in Episode 140 he takes her to dinner in order to celebrate her completion of the etiquette course, telling her "just let this be an example of what happens when you're with me or my family's firm. Your good work will not go unrewarded." Kousuke also decided to take Shin-Ae to this dinner after a conversation with Hansuke in Episode 139 where they talked about encouragement and how not everyone gets things as easily as them.
Kousuke originally took interest in Shin-Ae due to Nol's interest in her, saying in Episode 16 "I feel like we will be seeing each other more often considering my little brother's fascination with you…" In fact, Shin-Ae reminds him of a younger Nol, imagining him in her place during Episode 141. However, Kousuke is considerably kinder to Shin-Ae, somewhat "correcting" the mistakes he made during his relationship with Nol. For Example, in Episode 41, he accepts the birthday gift Shin-Ae gave him, while he destroyed the ones Nol tried to give him.
Kousuke also has a tendency to use Shin-Ae to mediate his interactions with Nol, inviting her to dinner with them in Episode 25 and Episode 90.
Shin-Ae sometimes feels uncomfortable when around Kousuke and often finds Kousuke to be tiresome to deal with, thinking in Episode 155 "why is it always this way with you?", since the two end up arguing often while they are together. Despite this, they do have moments where they get along and even open up, but this is mostly before the formal, such as in Episode 25 when Shin-Ae tells Kousuke about her separation from her younger sister or in Episode 41 when they talk after leaving Kousuke's apartment.
Not much is known about Shin-Ae and Kousuke's current attitudes towards each other, since they haven't spoken since Min-Hyuk's party.
Hansuke Shishido
Hansuke is Kousuke's cousin, although they were in the same friend group when they were in college. However, they fell out of touch when their friend group parted ways with Kousuke. They recently reconnected after the formal, and went out to dinner in Episode 79, something which Kousuke agreed to as a way to pay back Hansuke for helping Shin-Ae.
However, they have continued to meet up since this, and sometimes Hansuke tries to get Kousuke to do things that are fun, such as going to an amusement park or going clubbing. However, Kousuke does not enjoy these outings.
Kousuke also reaches out to Hansuke, like in Episode 96, when he calls Hansuke over to talk about his prior conversation with Yu Jing. Additionally, he calls Hansuke several times to talk. Hansuke tries his best to help Kousuke, trying to sooth his fears and help him enjoy himself, although Kousuke is somewhat resistant.
Hansuke is especially supportive of Kousuke in the arcs following the party, meeting him when he runs away from breakfast with Yui in Episode 227, and testing him to see if he has a concussion. He also tests Kousuke's blood for him, and does it a second time when he is doubtful of the first's results. He also tries to calm Nol down in Episode 238, explaining that Kousuke has had a rough day. In Episode 239 he tells Yu Jing "If only there was a way to help him cope with all this… I'm seriously worried for him."
Although Hansuke cares for Kousuke, Kousuke seems to doubt his motives, since he appears in Episode 212 when Kousuke is saying that nobody talks to him because they like him.
Randulph Skuli Hirahara
Kousuke is Rand's first son. Ever since he was young, Kousuke has always looked up to Rand and wanted to be like him. Episode 120 depicts a young Kousuke watching Rand at work after Yui told him to.
During a flashback in Episode 176, it is shown that when Rand leaves the dinner table after an argument with Yui, she tells Kousuke that Rand is a very important man and that it's a miracle he's able to spend as much time with them as he does. She tells Kousuke that to win his father's affections he should act more like him. This line of thinking along with Yui's assertions that their family's expressions of love are different, have caused Kousuke to chase after Rand. Rand's absence caused Yui to project false traits on him in order to manipulate Kousuke's perception of Rand.
The truth is that Rand doesn't desire for Kousuke to be perfect or to follow in his footsteps. In Episode 120, he tells Kousuke about other careers he could pursue, and in Episode 175, he says that he doesn't care that Kousuke and Nol aren't there for the speech, only that they are safe. However, at this point, Kousuke doesn't believe these words, and in Episode 212 it is shown just how much Rand's distance has impacted him.
In Episode 248 it is implied that Kousuke is not Rand's biological son.
Yui Hirahara
Yui is Kousuke's mother, but it has been revealed that she is not as caring as she initially seemed. She can be very doting towards him, such as in Episode 176, when she lets him eat cake for dinner, telling Rand "I'm providing him a path to an easier life." However, the reason behind this apparent care for Kousuke seems to be a motivation to keep him compliant.
Yui has a tendency to put Kousuke in uncomfortable situations for her own gain, such as encouraging Meg to go after Kousuke despite knowing that it bothers him and bringing Shin-Ae over to his apartment and having her wear his shirt in Episode 41. She also tendency to overstep boundaries with Kousuke, such as when she used his phone in order to message Shin-Ae on his behalf, or sending Jayce after him in Episode 244 when she is suspicious about his whereabouts.
Despite his mother's behavior, Kousuke tends to be defensive of her, snapping at Shin-Ae when she says "wretches" in relation to his mother, later telling her "I know she's a difficult woman but she is still my mother." He does have moments of resistance against his mother, most notably during the formal in Episode 62, when he tells her to leave Shin-Ae alone and saying Shin-Ae has been drugged because of her.
In Episode 221, Yui drugs Kousuke while in the hospital, most likely in an attempt to control the narrative of what happened that night, something that is strongly implied also happened during the night of the incident with Nol. However, this time Kousuke recognizes that something is wrong and refuses to eat the food she gives him during breakfast the next morning, and ends up leaving to meet Hansuke. He seems to be reflecting on the various falsehoods she has told him recently.
Megan Cho
Meg has an infatuation with Kousuke began years prior, when she was attending the same university as his cousin, Hansuke Shishido. When she was struggling, questioning if she should continue with engineering, he encouraged her, telling her that they need more women in STEM.
After this, Meg began obsessively pursuing Kousuke, something which bothered him greatly. Despite saying he was not going to reciprocate her feelings several times, even showing up at his workplace in Episode 15 and Episode 30.
However, things started to change after the formal. Meg came to Kousuke's workplace in Episode 76 but ended up deciding not to go up and see him, instead opting to leave and go to WacDonald's with Shin-Ae. She seems to have matured, and when telling Shin-Ae about her pursuit of Kousuke, she says "I already know the outcome… it always ends the same anyways. I guess I was foolish for hoping for something different in the first place…"
She also tells Alyssa in Episode 110 that she was a "troubled woman" when she was obsessed with Kousuke.
She avoided him at the Christmas party, but she made attempts to help him in Episode 213, bringing him some hot chocolate. However, he is unappreciative and still wary of her.
Yu Jing
Yu Jing and Kousuke met at school, and were part of the same friend group in college. Their friend group had a turbulent falling out, flashes of which can be seen in Episode 143 and Episode 228.
It appears that they didn't see each other for a while before Episode 90, although they also ran into each other at the formal. As Yu Jing gets more involved around the Hiraharas for a story she is writing, the two run into each other more frequently.
Kousuke is suspicious of Yu Jing, meeting her in Episode 92 in an attempt to find out what she talked about with Shin-Ae, although what she has said still weighs on him, especially in episodes 96 and 122.
Yu Jing enjoys teasing Kousuke, often calling him a variety of pet names, which he dislikes. In Episode 92, she confess that she still feels some resentment towards Kousuke, although in Episode 121 she says that she still views him as a friend.
Dieter Becker-Wulff
Dieter and Kousuke met when Kousuke used to 'baby-sit' his younger brother on outings, even when Yeong-Gi was in high-school. This stopped when Soushi joined the group. In the present, Kousuke and Dieter don't interact much.
Soushi Toyoshima
Kousuke uses Soushi as a way to keep an eye on Nol without having to be around him. This happened when Soushi was in middle school, and Kousuke was able to get the bullies to stop, promising that he would stop them permanently if Soushi decided to befriend Nol. In Episode 245, he tells Dieter and Shin-Ae about what happened, and how he feels terrible about it, but hasn't told Nol, since it fears it could be used as an excuse to ditch them.
Besides this, Kousuke and Soushi aren't close and don't appear to enjoy each other's company.
Nessa Lochlainn
Nessa and Kousuke didn't have many interactions, however it is clear that Kousuke has very negative feelings towards her, as her face is scribbled out in all of his flashbacks (episodes 142, 143, and 212).
Jayce
While Jayce can sometimes find Kousuke aggravating, he also cares about Kousuke, checking on him in Episode 248 on Yui's request, saying he'll respect Kousuke's wishes if there is something he doesn't want Yui to know about. In this episode, he also tells Kousuke that he worries about his health, saying that he will talk to Kousuke's parents if he wants to take the day off.
Alyssa Cho
Alyssa appears to have an infatuation with Kousuke, or at least is more interested in him than Nol, something which Nol points out in Episode 168. It is very possible that this is partially due to Yui's influence.
In Episode 110, she was surprised when she learned Kousuke might move to Japan. During the Christmas party arc, Alyssa tries to help Kousuke look for Nol when he runs off.
Min-Hyuk Park
Kousuke and Min-Hyuk are not well acquainted, but they met in Episode 105, when Min-Hyuk approached Kousuke, complimenting his coat. This interaction didn't end well.
They met again at Min-Hyuk's surprise party, and in Episode 208, Min-Hyuk tried to mediate a fight between Kousuke and Nol. In this altercation, Min-Hyuk makes it clear that he isn't fond of Kousuke, saying "nothing nice seems to come out of your mouth."
Maya Park
Maya has met both Kousuke and Nol, but she is not well acquainted with them. She tackled Kousuke in Episode 8, and saw him again in Episode 173 when he comes to Min-Hyuk's party. While she set up Shin-Ae on a blind date with Kousuke early in the story, she does not appear to be fond of him.
